Louis XV-style Folding Table With A Marquetry Design Featuring Floral Motifs. 19th Century
A charming little side table with an elegantly scalloped shape and a delightful inlaid design on all sides featuring scrollwork, twists, fleurons, acanthus bases, and four-lobed florets that, in a masterful interplay of curves and counter-curves, form oblong, multi-lobed medallions, with the spandrels punctuated by understated circular or linear geometric motifs. Complementing the graceful contours of the piece, these undulating botanical compositions, crafted from amaranth end-grain wood, unfold across its tabletop and side flaps on a rosewood frieze backing and, conversely, on its base, its rosewood end-grain legs rest on an amaranth wood backing. This judicious and harmonious chromatic contrast lends refinement and character to this small center table with its feminine Louis XV styling, executed with appreciable restraint. Set upon four tall, slender legs fitted with leaf-decorated half-clogs equipped with casters, it features a drawer on the front, accented by a lock plate with a delicate “Rocaille” motif in chiseled and gilded bronze; beneath the frame lies a sliding compartment in a truncated cone shape.Ideal for complementing the furnishings of a parlor—or any other room—this small side table, distinguished by the fluidity of its lines, the shimmer of its marquetry with its carefully chosen ornamental design, and its meticulous craftsmanship—"full of tasteful elegance and charming execution"—will happily accommodate a vase converted into a lamp, a charming little clock, delightful artistic bronze sculptures, dainty trinkets, and various small boxes. A versatile piece of furniture that combines functionality, charm, and aesthetic appeal.
