Seascape, Moonlight - Under Glass, Louis-philippe Period, Circa 1840.

Marine, in the Moonlight - Charming oval-shaped fixed under glass with mother-of-pearl highlights depicting, in the light of a dreamlike moonlight, a modest maritime site and its flotilla of fishing boats. Its curved glass set in an original stuccoed and gilded wooden frame worked on its edge molded with cord motifs, scalloped oves and floral leafy garlands. Mounted on wooden parquet. Work from the first half of the 19th century, Louis-Philippe period. Circa 1840. In the iconographic tradition of "Picturesque Views", this pleasant and very decorative fixed under glass, meticulously painted, shows a Maritime Scene in the Moonlight. Diapre with a soft bluish luminosity playing harmoniously on the contrast established with the shimmering bistre tones arranged in the foreground (shore, stone pontoon, unfurled sails of the Tartane at rest), the painting presents a composition that is both homogeneous and detailed. Profiled in the background, distant hills, a rocky eminence topped with architectural motifs (lighthouse, citadel) evocative of the bay of a modest maritime site form a setting for a charming flotilla of small fishing boats progressing gently on calm waters edged with wavelets. Nicely anecdotal, small details (wooden mooring posts, wicker basket and hood, fishermen sitting in their frail boats) add charm and life to this nocturnal maritime view illuminated by the silvery light of the moon piercing serene skies. Iridescent shards and pieces of mother-of-pearl (burgau) lend refinement and dreaminess to this little picture brightened with fine touches of bright color (red of the pavilions). Beyond its decorative character, this glass-mounted fixed piece, both lively and skillfully crafted, is anchored by its technical prowess and its theme in the aesthetic sensitivity and imagination of an era favoring unusual materials, "natural" places and sites conducive to romantic reveries. Materials: polychrome painting on glass; curved glass; burgau; stuccoed and gilded wood; wooden parquet.
