Portrait Of A Standing Nude Woman, Eugène Verboeckhoven, 1854, Signed And Dated
In this work, Verboeckhoven demonstrates his subtle mastery of chiaroscuro and human anatomy. The soft, warm light falls from the upper left and contours her back, legs, and hips with exquisite tenderness. The porcelain-like texture of her skin contrasts beautifully with the thick folds of the curtain and the shiny, golden silk cushions placed on the daybed. Her left hand rests elegantly on a white sheet draped over the furniture, creating a clear point of balance in the composition.
Eugène Verboeckhoven enjoys worldwide renown as the undisputed master of 19th-century Belgian animal painting. His pastoral landscapes, populated by sheep, cows, and poultry rendered with perfect anatomy, were so highly prized that countless contemporaries asked him to embellish their landscapes with livestock. It is precisely this specialization that makes this 1854 painting a near-museum-quality rarity within his body of work. Works in which Verboeckhoven devotes himself exclusively to the human nude are extremely rare and reveal a sensual and academic side of the artist that is entirely different. The painting fits perfectly within the heyday of Romanticism and Orientalism, inspired by contemporaries such as Eugène Delacroix and Jean-Auguste Ingres. This makes the painting a rare collector’s item for connoisseurs seeking a signature work that demonstrates the master’s versatility.
About the artist:
Eugène Joseph Verboeckhoven (1798–1881) was born in Warneton and grew up in an artistic environment. Around 1827, he moved to Brussels, where he became one of the most influential artists of the Belgian Romantic movement. Verboeckhoven gained international renown for his fabulous and technically flawless depictions of livestock. His compositions were distinguished by a meticulous rendering of the texture of wool and coats, combined with idyllic lighting. Although he is primarily known for his animal scenes, Verboeckhoven traveled frequently to France, Germany, England, and Italy. These travels fueled his interest in broader academic themes, including portraiture, mythological scenes, and the female nude.
