An Empere Gilt Bronze Inkwell. Early 19th Century, Circa 1810–1815
AN EMPIRE GILT-BRONZE INKWELL
EARLY 19TH CENTURY, CIRCA 1810–1815
In burr elm and ebony veneer, enriched with finely chased and gilt-bronze mounts. The rectangular base is decorated to the front with a gilt-bronze mount depicting attributes of Music, centred by an antique lyre flanked by laurel branches and palmettes.
The ebony top accommodates two square-cut crystal inkwells, encircled by openwork friezes of scrolling foliage in gilt bronze, framing a central chalice-shaped receptacle on a guilloche-decorated foot.
The whole is raised on four gilt-bronze lion’s paw feet.
