"the Bather," Also Known As "venus Emerging From The Bath," Alabaster, Signed E. Scarcelli, 19th Century, Ancient Nude Woman
Artist: E. Scarcelli
An antique, large-scale alabaster sculpture depicting *La Baigneuse*, known as “Venus Emerging from the Bath.”
A work based on the model by Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain (1710–1795).
The young woman is depicted in a graceful pose, her body slightly bent forward, one leg raised onto a rocky outcrop, while a drapery accentuates the movement of the composition.
The hairstyle, pulled back into a bun and rendered with precision, as well as the modeling of the face and body, reflect the neoclassical style of the original model.
The treatment of the alabaster plays on the contrast between the smooth surfaces of the body, the folds of the drapery, the hair, and the more textured base.
The sculpture is signed “E. Scarcelli” directly into the alabaster.
This work can be compared to late 19th-century Italian decorative alabaster production.
Height: 55 cm.
Very good overall condition
Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain was admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1751. He worked notably for the court of Louis XV and is known for several female figures characterized by supple modeling and a naturalistic treatment of the body.
