Mariano Otero was a painter, sculptor, and screenprint artist.
Spanish, born in Madrid on August 11, 1942; died on July 9, 2019, in Rennes. In 1956, he moved with his family to join his father—a Republican who had been forced to flee the Franco regime in 1947—in Rennes, where he would spend most of his life.
After studying at the École Régionale des Beaux-Arts in Rennes, he graduated with a degree in painting in 1962. He founded the Atelier des Trois with his brother Antonio and his sister-in-law Clotilde Vautier, who were also painters, and they exhibited together in numerous galleries in Brittany beginning in the 1960s.
Mariano Otero continued to paint until the end of his life, exhibiting in France, Spain, and many countries around the world.
Beginning in 1992, his work—primarily figurative—gave prominence to women through portraits, nudes, tango scenes, bar scenes, and more, rendered in oils on canvas and pastels of great sensitivity.
A representative oil on canvas from his body of work, Isabelle in a White Shirt, from 1962, is housed at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rennes.
