Auguste Chabaud was born in Nîmes in 1882. At the age of 15, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon, where his teacher was Pierre Grivolas, who had previously trained René Seyssaud. At the dawn of the 20th century, the young man traveled to Paris but preferred the cafés of the Latin Quarter to Cormon’s academic lessons.

However, the Midi region of his birth called him back to its overwhelming sun, which engulfed colors rather than enhancing the intensity of each one. In Chabaud’s work, the sum of the hues melts into a blue magma, a fiery creative paste veined with intense black. White—used sparingly in its pure form or, more often, with a grayish tint—completes the trilogy of dominant tones that exalt Provençal nature. Back with his mother at the Mas de Martin in Graveson, shepherds and farmers, farm work, and farmyard animals replaced the cabaret singer, the courtesan, and the echoing staircases of Montmartre.

It also marks the disappearance of a jarring, excessive, ruthless, and unhealthy world—one disconnected from the earth—and the advent of a rural world where labor flows to the rhythm of the seasons, in a natural and contemplative order.

Ring true, strikingly modern, rooted in the earth like life itself. The essence of Chabaud’s work could be summed up in these terms. Masterful yet humble, just like the artist who brings it to life by pouring his soul into it.
