Artist: Furuichi Kinga (1805-1880)
Kakejiku by Furuichi Kinga (1805–1880), active during the Edo period. An ink painting depicting a tanuki strolling along, gazing at a bird perched on a branch. Signed in the lower right corner, followed by the artist’s seal. Furuichi Kinga traveled to Kyoto in his youth to study under the famous master of the Shijo school, Okamoto Toyohiko. He was considered one of the most talented students of that school. Around 1830, he returned to his native region and opened a painting studio that helped popularize the Shijo style in the Okayama area. He was initially known as “Ranzan” (due to his family’s dyeing business). He later adopted the name Kinga. His works are now housed in institutions such as the Kurashiki Museum in Japan.
