Netsuke – Adorable rat by Itteï, Gifu. Finely carved rat (nezumi) is perched on an edamame bean pod. The fur is finely incised and the wood has a beautiful natural patina. The eyes and the two incisors visible below are inlaid. The underside is particularly well carved, showing the curved tail and finely carved legs. Signed under the base. Japan Edo (1603-1868) 19th century.
