Small Pectoral Cross With A Reliquary And Beautiful Arched Motifs; Post-byzantine Art?
Small silvered-brass cross composed of two thick, openwork faces with architectural decoration, including arcades. Together, the two sections form a cross-shaped container intended to hold small textile relics or blessed earth. This type of object is generally known as an encolpion.
Offered in as-found condition. The cross has previously been opened and no longer contains any relics. Its original rivets have been replaced with copper wire.
Dating remains uncertain. Subject to specialist examination, its style and construction may suggest a late medieval or Renaissance origin.
Condition: reasonably good as-found condition, with visible wear, oxidation and old alterations. No concealed flaws.
