Gilded And Polychrome Carved Wooden Base Decorated With Acanthus Leaves, 18th Century, Ca. 1760–70
A pedestal, originally intended to support a sculpture in the round, made of gilded and polychrome carved wood; the base and abacus are the color of porphyry, and the middle band is decorated with acanthus leaves.
Most likely a French piece, dating from the transition period between the Louis XV and Louis XVI eras, around 1760–70, at that point of balance between the exuberance of the curve and the growing popularity of classical antiquity.
Damage and missing parts are documented in the photographs.
An object “in its original condition” that possesses great character.
