Symbolist School (c. 1920) - The Poet At Age Fourteen

- Pencil on paper. Signed with initials.

- Who, then, is this boy? Barely fourteen springs have shaped the gentle curve of his chin and that broad forehead, where the shadows of graphite already seem to foreshadow the weight of a precocious calling. In his half-closed gaze, marked by a gravity unusual for his age, one can read the secret vertigo of one who has begun to decipher the world’s hidden music and senses that words will, sooner or later, be his only homeland and his only condemnation. His lips, barely tinged with a melancholic shade of red, maintain the watchful silence of child-poets—those who, before daring to sing, listen fervently to the invisible pulse of things. As I contemplate him thus, captured in the fragility of the paper and the eternity of the line, I glimpse the man he will become: someone who will spend his youth in pursuit of the perfect verse, unaware that true poetry lay right there, in that fleeting moment of feverish, innocent mystery.
