Léon Pointu Vase, Glazed Stoneware
Léon Pointu (1879–1942), was trained by his father, himself a great ceramist. He was able to use and apply all of this family know-how and artistry, while also making it his own. Indeed, his stoneware pieces reveal a desire to transcend the family legacy. Léon was not only a sculptor but also a master of color. His work reflects a constant pursuit of innovation and an insatiable quest for an aesthetic that is both refined and understated.
This glazed stoneware vase, signed by Léon Pointu, is a remarkable piece of ceramic art. Measuring 22 cm in height, it features an elegant, slender silhouette with a flared neck. The glaze, applied over a putty-colored base that is very soft to the touch, is enhanced by inverted drips of deep blue, which are also found on the neck. This creates a striking visual effect, recalling traditional glazing techniques while evoking a timeless modernity.
Léon Pointu, known for his expertise in ceramics, has masterfully combined simple forms with a richness of texture and color. This vase, with its expertly executed glaze drips, perfectly illustrates his talent for manipulating glaze to produce natural and sophisticated decorative effects.
Ideal for adding a touch of elegance to a contemporary or classic interior, this vase is not only a utilitarian object but also a work of art that bears witness to the artisanal craftsmanship of early 20th-century France.
