The Village Of Pont-d'ain. 19th-century French School.
19th-century oil on cardboard depicting the village of Pont-d'Ain, based on a composition by Adolphe Appian (1818–1898).
This landscape scene poetically depicts the peaceful banks of the Ain River at the foot of the village of Pont-d'Ain. The artist has composed a serene view in which the water plays a prominent role.
In the foreground, two children play at the water’s edge, while a little further away, two washerwomen are seated on the riverbank. Another figure strolls along the path that runs alongside the river.
On the left, the village houses with their red-tiled roofs are partially hidden behind a row of poplars. Wooded hills and a cloud-filled sky complete the scene.
The color palette, dominated by deep greens, silvery grays, and warm ochres, subtly conveys the atmospheric effects.
The choice of cardboard as a support—widely used in the 19th century for plein air studies and works intended for amateurs—as well as the handwritten inscription on the reverse “ Pont d’Ain (village) after Appian”, suggest that this is an interpretation based on a composition byAdolphe Appian, one of the leading figures in French landscape painting of the second half of the 19th century.
This work reflects the popularity of river landscapes in the Lyon region, where nature and rural scenes are depicted with a sensibility marked by realism and poetry.
