19th-century Agate Cameo In High Relief
This is a stunning brooch from the Napoleon III era, adorned with an imposing two-layered cameo carved in high relief.
The young vestal virgin is stunning; the bust is depicted in a three-quarter profile, with a smiling face, almond-shaped eyes, and hair styled in the classical manner, featuring a delicate garland of flowers—perhaps roses—in her hair.
The details are superb; the face is very finely executed, and the dress features beautiful drapery in the classical style, with the pleats beautifully crafted.
The cameo is carved in very high relief; the vestal virgin’s face stands out from a thick layer of white agate nearly 2 cm thick, set against a layer of orange agate forming the background.
A beautiful cameo with such deep relief—it is truly a masterpiece of glyptic art.
This cameo is set in a 750/00 gold brooch, in the Etruscan style, decorated with 16 pink cabochon stones alternating with black enamel beads.
The entire piece is ravishing.
This beautiful, high-quality brooch has retained its original safety chain with a pin at the end.
The cameo bears a faint signature on the back.
Inspired by antiquity, this cameo is of very fine quality, and the Etruscan-style brooch setting is reminiscent of beautiful Italian jewelry from the second half of the 19th century.
