Oil On Panel – Montmartre School – Work By G. Joubin & F. Laval – Father Joseph
Artist: Georges Joubin Et Fernand Laval
Oil on panel, a true piece of history from the Parisian bohemian scene of the Roaring Twenties.
This work captures the essence and camaraderie of the studios on the Butte Montmartre through a rare collaborative effort by two major figures of the Montmartre School.
The painting depicts a colorful and iconic figure of the neighborhood: “The Brave Father Joseph.”
Dressed in his ceremonial uniform with a white shoulder strap and armed with his drum, he is most likely the famous rural constable or official town crier of the Free Commune of Montmartre, who traditionally led the way during parades and the Montmartre grape harvest festival.
This cross-referenced work attests to the close bond that united the neighborhood’s painters and features a unique dual identification: Lower left: Titled in the artist’s own hand “Le brave Père Joseph” and signed with the interlaced monogram F.L., attributable to Fernand LAVAL (1886–1966)
Lower right: Signed in full by Georges JOUBIN (1888–1983), a leading painter of the Butte and the historic founder of the École de Montmartre movement in 1929, who came to complete the painting
Dimensions: 65 x 47 cm
Very good condition
