Large Lithophany "the Little Fruit Vendor"—a Curiosity
Lithophane NPM 330
Dimensions: 15.5 x 19.5 cm
A young boy displays his fruit in a basket placed on the ground in front of him.
This classic, realistic genre scene is inspired by the Spanish Baroque painter Murillo.
A lithophane is a thin ceramic plate with a relief design, ranging in thickness from 1.5 to 4 mm.
The porcelain is fired twice at a temperature of 1250 °C.
Under normal lighting, virtually no image is visible, but a three-dimensional image is created when a light is placed behind it.
Lithophanes became particularly popular in the mid-19th century. Placed in front of a candle, they served as bedside lamps or were hung in front of a window.
