Medical Curiosity: “carolus” Electromagnetic Jewelry – F. De Boyères – 19th Century – Sgdg –

An electromagnetic medal known as “CAROLUS,” manufactured by Ferdinand de Boyères, French inventor active in late 19th century.
These objects were supposed to “cure almost anything,” according to advertisements of period.
Diameter: approx. 4.3 cm. A combination of metals (copper, steel, brass, lead, etc.) arranged harmoniously for a beautiful decorative effect. Features a ring and a loop for wearing against bare skin.
Inscription: CAROLUS Electromagnetic Medal, Bté S.G.D.G – Registered – Ferd. de Boyères.
A typical object from the era of electrotherapy (circa 1880–1900), these medals were worn on chest and were believed to produce a weak electric current beneficial to health.
Good condition as found, some wear, and in need of cleaning.
