Seditious Mask Mocking The Spaniard.

Masked processions and carnival parades were all occasions when the natives attempted to express their often hidden feelings. The notion of masquerade takes on its full meaning when one knows that the indigenous peoples of Central America used masks to express their contempt for invaders… Here, the caricature of the European Spaniard is obvious, but for the use of the word "seditious" in the title, one must look closely… The garrisons, for their part, were none the wiser. (Hint: look at the mustaches)… Object from a private collection. The base is terracotta, painted. Shaped like an open hand.
