19th-century Cast-iron Reclining Lion Doorstop
This object is a cast-iron automatic door-stop mechanism dating from the late 19th century.
The sculpted form of a reclining lion cleverly conceals a heavy-duty industrial mechanism designed to keep a gate or a heavy carriage gate open or closed.
How it works: The central vertical groove visible in the second photo allowed a rod or cable to slide through it or to be directly secured to a part of a gate or barrier. The push button activates a spring-loaded latch or bolt to lock or unlock the mechanism in the open or closed position. Style and Material: Made of cast iron, a very dense material designed to withstand impacts and heavy outdoor use. The details of the lion’s mane feature a folk art style typical of European foundries (particularly French and Belgian ones) from the Industrial Revolution. Dimensions: Its compact dimensions (16 x 15 x 13 cm), combined with its high density, make it ideal for use as a safety counterweight or mechanical stop. Good condition, spring in working order
