Antique Pendant, Baroque Pendant With Garnet And Enamel
We are offering for sale an extremely rare, museum-quality Sévigné pendant (a bodice jewel) dating from the High Baroque period (late 17th century; it could also be an early Georgian piece). This three-part piece captivates with its typically Baroque design language and the finesse of its craftsmanship.
The pendant consists of a round clasp with a floral motif, a central raised bow, and a movable teardrop-shaped lower section crafted in openwork. All three elements are adorned with opaque white, light blue, and black enamel, featuring delicate dot and scroll motifs typical of the period. On the reverse, the refined enameling continues (champlevé-style with a floral design).
The piece is set with three magnificent deep-red garnets (presumably in closed, gold-foiled collet settings), which beautifully capture the light thanks to their historical cut (a variation of the table or rose cut):
• Lower section: a large oval garnet (approx. 7.41 mm x 5.50 mm)
• Upper section: a round garnet (approx. 5.76 mm)
• Center of the clasp: a smaller round garnet (approx. 3.70 mm)
Historical context:
The shape of this cut dates back to the Marquise de Sévigné and became popular throughout Europe during the second half of the 17th century thanks to French ornamental engravings (such as those by Gilles Légaré). Stylistically, this piece follows tradition.
