"Soleil Couchant"
Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1874 in the lower right corner
Charles Pierre, known as Karl Daubigny, born in Paris on June 9, 1846, and died in Auvers-sur-Oise on May 23, 1886, was a French painter.
A student of his father, Charles-François Daubigny—who played a key role in the evolution of landscape painting during the 19th century and influenced Eugène Boudin and Jongkind—Karl Daubigny made his debut at the 1863 Salon. A landscape painter, he primarily painted Normandy and the Forest of Fontainebleau. Stricken by tuberculosis within a few weeks, he died prematurely at the age of 39 in his home-studio in Auvers-sur-Oise.
The sale of his studio took place six months later, on November 22 and 23, at the Hôtel Drouot. The two sessions (255 lots) raised 66,500 francs, which were donated to Karl Daubigny’s widow.
