Large Art Deco Glazed Stoneware Pitcher By Louis Garin, Hb Quimper, Odetta 931-1477, 32 Cm, Ifs26ode001

Artist: Louis Garin Odetta
Rare, large jug with two handles, made of polychrome glazed stoneware, produced by the Grande Maison HB (Hubaudière-Bousquet) factory in Quimper, "Odetta" line, Art Deco period (circa 1928–1938) IFS26ODE001

The neck is adorned with a geometric frieze featuring fan-shaped circular motifs, engraved on an ivory background and framed below the stylized handles in dark stoneware. The body features two midnight-blue enamel bands framing an area striated with horizontal lines on an ivory background; the lower part of the body and the pedestal are covered in a deep green-black enamel.

Signed on the base “HB Quimper Garin” and with the monogram “g” hand-engraved in relief beneath the glaze; numbered 931-1477 (931: form reference — 1477: decoration reference).

Louis Garin (Rennes, 1888 – 1959) was a painter and decorator from Rennes, largely self-taught, who established himself in the art salons of the interwar period as one of the most prolific artists of his generation, devoting the bulk of his work to Brittany: folk festivals, pardons, regattas, and scenes of daily life. Beginning in 1922, he exhibited at the Salon of the Société nationale des beaux-arts, and in 1929 his work on Île-aux-Moines was shown at the Bernheim Gallery in Paris. Between 1928 and 1938, he collaborated with the Grande Maison de la Hubaudière (HB) in Quimper, alongside sculptor René Quillivic and painters Alphonse Chanteau, Georges Brisson, Georges Renaud, Paul Fouillen, and René Beauclair, contributing to the peak productivity of the Odetta brand (Les Ateliers de l’Odet). His ceramic output remains rare: aside from his famous vases depicting the women of Île-aux-Moines and sailboats, he signed only a limited number of pieces, making each one particularly sought after by collectors. A versatile artist, Garin also created monumental decorations (the Church of Sainte-Thérèse in Rennes, Hôtel Duguesclin) and, in 1935, contributed to the decoration of the games room in the first-class section of the ocean liner Normandie, alongside Mathurin Méheut, Jean Dupas, Lalique, and Jean Dunand.
