The form of this vase, known as ‘Gu’, is one of the principal Chinese archaistic forms. The gu (觚) was originally a ritual bronze vessel in ancient China. It is recognisable by its curved profile, narrowing at the waist.
This form endured well beyond its original ritual function. Numerous craftsmen adopted models derived from ancient bronzes and adapted them to jade, stoneware, cloisonné enamels and porcelain.
In perfect condition, an enamel defect on the foot.
