Tiger in black patinated bronze. The inscription on the presentation box dates the work to 1942: “made by Miyaji Torahiko,” the seventeenth year of the Shōwa era, Year of the Tiger.
A sculptor and member of the Nitten council (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition), Miyaji Torahiko (1902–1995) was born on 24 September 1902 in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. He graduated from the sculpture department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1927 and was selected for the 9th Teiten (Imperial Fine Arts Exhibition) in 1928. He served on the selection committee and as a director of the Nihon Mokuso-kai (Japanese Wood Sculpture Association). Toward the end of his life, his work moved toward abstraction.
