Mask Noh - Young Woman (onna-men) – Japan, Ca. 1930–1950
Carved, plastered, and polychromed wood. A female mask belonging to the onna-men (女面) family, likely of the Ko-omote / Waka-onna type, depicting a young woman. Oval face with a high forehead, narrow eyes, painted eyebrows, and a slightly parted mouth revealing teeth blackened according to the court custom of ohaguro (tooth blackening with a solution of iron filings and vinegar).
Sculptor’s seal on the reverse. There are signs of wear on the reverse, indicating that the mask was worn.
