Heart-shaped Montpellier Earthenware Inkwell – 18th Century
A heart-shaped polychrome earthenware inkwell from Montpellier, dating from the second half of the 18th century.
It features a distinctive yellow background adorned with a design of polychrome bouquets and small flowers in shades of blue, green, and orange.
It consists of two removable cups with domed lids featuring conical rims. Two small holes at the tip of the heart are designed to hold quills.
A beautiful functional piece, representative of 18th-century southern French earthenware production and the repertoire traditionally associated with “Vieux Montpellier.”
In its original condition with glaze crazing, chipping, and small chips, particularly on the bowls and the lid handles, as visible in the photographs.
Dimensions: 14 × 13.5 cm. Height with lids: 8.5 cm.
