An interesting drawing in brown ink with a sepia tint. Based on a work by Subleyras, 1699–1749. Circa 1727. A beautiful, highly detailed drawing depicting the biblical theme of the bronze serpent coiled around Moses’ staff. Numerous figures appear overwhelmed and prostrate. The scene takes place in a tent camp in the desert. Moses, on the left, points to the large reptile—coiled around his staff and of disproportionate size. An elderly man, seemingly on his deathbed, stands in the center, supported by a young woman. Vigorous brushwork, with heavy hatching to accentuate the relief, particularly on the right side of the scene. The postures of the men and women are carefully studied and highly varied. Beautifully executed.
