The wide-open mouth is reminiscent of an ancient theatrical mask, which might have served as a model for a fountain spout or a garden ornament.
The terracotta was originally painted a terracotta color; the paint is heavily flaked, perhaps intended to smooth out the somewhat coarse grain of the material itself.
