A Louis XVI "tronchin" Or Architect's Table
A beautiful and rare architect's table known as a "Tronchin" table, named after the physician Théodore Tronchin, who recommended that his patients use a table with a tilting top—allowing them to adjust the angle depending on whether they wished to sit or stand—in order to relieve back strain.
Made of mahogany, it rests on four sheathed legs topped with fluting and opens via a drawer at the front.
The drawer reveals a leather-upholstered shelf, opening to a compartment, and is equipped with compartments designed to hold ink and sand.
The leather-trimmed tabletop unfolds to form a writing desk and rises via an ingenious mechanism that allows for adjustment of both height and orientation.
On each side of the table is a leather-covered pull handle.
A French piece dating from around 1780, from the Louis XVI period.
Dimensions:
Height 76.5 cm (closed) and 136 cm (opened)
Width 91.5 cm
Depth 54 cm
