Large Carved Wooden Mirror In The Style Of Viardot—with Dragon And Putto Motifs—19th Century

Spectacular carved wooden mirror, featuring a very rich high-relief decoration inspired by Japanese, rocaille, and Neo-Louis XV styles.

The undulating mirror surface, highlighted by a bevel, is surrounded by an imposing frame carved with curves, volutes, foliage, flowers, and fruit.

The left side is animated by a remarkable winged fantastical creature reminiscent of a dragon or a chimera, while the right side is adorned with a seated putto carved in the round.

The crowning element, particularly intricately crafted, features large, dynamic leaves surrounding a sculpted floral motif.

The piece as a whole offers a highly decorative asymmetrical composition, characteristic of the Rocaille style.

The carving is generous and particularly expressive, with numerous elements rendered in high relief, lending great depth to the entire piece.

The reverse side reveals the frame’s traditional construction as well as the backing protecting the glass.
