Large Cardboard Box Imitating Embossed Leather, Signed "à Jean De Paris Raynaud & Heloin"

Large box for shawls or scarves, made of cardboard designed to resemble embossed leather and featuring beautiful Neo-Renaissance style decoration; the central cartouche is surrounded by a wide frieze of scrolling foliage and bears the signature of the prestigious Parisian shop "À Jean de Paris" in gold lettering. This Napoleon III-style box dates from the first half of the 20th century.

The "À Jean de Paris" shop was founded in the 19th century (specifically, the first half of the 1800s). In its early days, it was a renowned shop specializing in novelties, fabrics, and drapery. At that time, the Rue du Bac was one of Paris's busiest commercial thoroughfares, foreshadowing the advent of the great department stores.
By the 20th century, it had become the home of one of the city's major galleries for antiques and rare curiosities—so much so that the firm commissioned the production of 19th-century style boxes for its products and clientele.

A fine collector's piece, it stands as a testament to the pinnacle of refinement and luxury within the Parisian world of culture and antiques during the 1930s.
