Etienne Robert (1875–1959), Swiss Painter, Provençal Landscape, The Village Of La Garde, Var

Artist: Etienne Robert (1875-1959)
A beautiful, very luminous painting depicting a Provençal landscape, in the Post-Impressionist style, executed in oil on canvas by the Swiss painter Étienne Robert (1875–1959).

Work DetailsSigned “E. Robert” in the lower left corner of the composition.

The Artist: Étienne Robert, born in 1875 in Le Locle(Switzerland) and died in 1959 in Marseille.
Étienne Robert had his own studio and was basedin Marseille. He traveled extensively throughout Provence, Corsica, and theBalearic Islands to paint landscapes and seascapes en plein air that were deeplyimbued with light.
Details of the work and the artistStyle:
Inspired by Post-Impressionism,the work employs a vibrant, textured brushstroke to capture thelight of the South of France.
Composition: In the foreground, the scene highlightsa gnarled umbrella pine typical of the Mediterranean basin; then the eyeis drawn to a typical Provençal hilltop village, bathed in the bright light of theSouthern Mediterranean; a note on the back of the canvas identifies thevillage depicted as La Garde, located in the departmentof Var (83), right next to Toulon.
This location matches the painting perfectly—the Rock andits castle; the historic village of La Garde is famous for itsandesite (a dark volcanic rock) rocky outcrop, atop which stand theruins of its medieval castle and chapel. In the painting, one can clearlydistinguish the silhouette of this hilltop village crowning the hill in thebackground.

A favorite subject: Based in Marseille,Étienne Robert was highly active in the areas around Toulon and Hyères. Infact, other works by him are listed under the titles “Surroundings of Toulon” or “Seaside in the Var.” At the time the artist painted this canvas (earlyhalf of the 20th century), the lower part of La Garde was still a largelyagricultural plain, which explains the presence of fields, trees, and thisunspoiled natural landscape in the foreground.

Frame: Presented in an antique gilded carved frame.
