NEO-EGYPTIAN PATINATED BRONZE DESK INKWELL
SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY
Of rectangular form, the raised-edge tray is decorated with friezes of stylized lotus motifs and rests on four scroll-form bracket feet.
The front, centred by a mascaron depicting the goddess Hathor, is richly decorated in the Egyptian Revival style. The upper surface supports a pharaoh’s bust wearing the nemes headdress, flanked by two lidded inkwells.
The stepped covers are surmounted by reclining canine figures, evoking the god Anubis symbolically watching over the receptacles.
