An elephant at the heart of the design

This French Art Deco vase features a rounded body decorated with an elephant amid stylized foliage. Large leaves and fine lines frame the animal. The design thus blends with the vase’s shape and gives it a sculptural presence.

The smoked glass alternates between more transparent areas and satin-finished sections. Depending on the light, the elephant’s body and the plant motifs stand out with varying intensity. The natural forms are simplified into clean outlines, in the spirit of French Art Deco.

This animal motif evokes the interest in animals and plant landscapes found in the decorative arts of the 1920s and 1930s. Here, Pierre d’Avesn combines it with a clearly structured vase form.
