Artist: Pietro Longhi
Attributed to Pietro Longhi. The Vain Noblewoman. Oil on canvas, 82 x 65 cm, Venice, 1701–1785. The scene depicts an intimate, everyday moment in a noblewoman’s grooming routine. A young maid adorns the older woman’s hair with a feather and other ornaments. The noblewoman gazes at herself in the mirror she holds in one hand, a pair of tweezers in the other, surrounded by various scattered makeup items, such as bottles and boxes of blush and a theatrical mask. The painting reflects the irony and keen observation characteristic of Pietro Longhi’s favorite themes, as he pays close attention to the details of the characters’ clothing, jewelry, and expressions.
