An elegant head-and-shoulders portrait of a young red-haired woman, with a solemn expression, turned slightly, against a dark background, in a tight frame.

The artist depicts a young woman with a delicate, symmetrical, and luminous face, featuring large dark eyes, a delicately defined mouth, and a very soft complexion. Her abundant red hair frames her face and falls over her right shoulder in a long, coppery cascade that contrasts with the deep blue of her garment.

The painter avoids any sense of clutter. The dark background isolates the figure and enhances the radiance of her complexion. The light caresses her forehead, cheeks, nose, and neck. This very diffuse light lends the model a presence that is at once natural, elegant, and mysteriously evanescent.

Her gaze, directed straight at the viewer, remains restrained, without any theatrical effect. This simplicity accentuates the sense of closeness to the subject. The young woman’s beauty is rendered with great restraint, without excessive idealization: Ballavoine preserves the face’s individuality while seeking harmony in the features.

Jules-Frédéric Ballavoine (1842–1914), a French painter trained under Isidore Pils, distinguished himself in portraits, genre scenes, and female figures. He exhibited very regularly at the Paris Salon. The Musée d’Orsay archives document his presence at the Salons through the early 20th century.

The female figure occupies a central place in his work. Several portraits of young women are now held in public collections, notably a *Young Girl* at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, a *Portrait of an Opera Actress* at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, and a *Young Red-Haired Woman* held at the Woodmere Art Museum. This type of portrait is reminiscent of Henner or Augustin Zwiller.

Here, Ballavoine works with a very fine, blended, and almost porcelain-like brushwork in his rendering of the face. The transitions are gradual, particularly in the skin tones, where the shifts between light and shadow are very soft. The hair, by contrast, is rendered with a slightly freer touch, blending red, brown, and orange hues. The deep blue of the dress provides a cool counterpoint to the warmth of the hair and skin tone.

This contrast between the dark background, fair skin, blue dress, and red hair lends the portrait a great decorative elegance while retaining a genuine sense of intimacy.
