The white enamel, known as Saxon enamel, is here accented with gold and small drops of green, blue, and red enamel to imitate precious stones. This technique is attributed to the Berlin workshop of Pierre Fromery (1658–1738), a Huguenot refugee. Taken over by his son Alexandre (1695–1775), the workshop came to specialize in these luxurious snuffboxes in the Parisian style. While many snuffboxes were made directly in Berlin, the workshop also exported enamel plaques to Paris, where they were assembled.
Ours is one such piece, as evidenced by its Parisian hallmark for the period 1738–1744 (fox’s head).
