Camille Merlaud (1877–1957), *the Angoulême Plateau As Seen From The Banks Of The Charente*, Oil On Canvas

This oil on panel (cardboard) signed "Camille Merlaud" in the lower left corner depicts a view toward the Angoulême plateau from thebanks of the Charente River; one can make out the two chimneys of the oldpaper mills destroyed during the 1939–1945 war, the Church of Sainte Ausone, and the domes of Saint Pierre Cathedral, all set against amisty and cloudy backdrop.
Camille Merlaud (1877–1957), aand sculptor, originally from Verteillac in the Dordogne, painted primarily landscapes of the Périgord countryside as well asscenes of rural life, often in an Impressionist style.
However, he also set up his easel in the Charente region, where, it seems, he hadsome family ties.
Called to arms during World War I (1914–1918), he brought back landscapes of the Somme and views of thebattlefield, as well as numerous drawings—a medium in which he excelled.
He exhibited at the Salon desIndépendants in Paris and participated in exhibitions in the Netherlands and England.
