Antique Painting St. John Oil On Canvas France XVII-xviii Century Original

Oil on canvas. French school, late 17th–early 18th century.
The painting is a replica of the one created by Nicolas Poussin in 1634–35, which was initially part of André Le Norte’s collection, then donated in 1693 to the King of France, and is now housed in the Louvre Museum.
The scene is set in a lush landscape through which the Jordan River flows majestically.
On the riverbank, at the center of the scene, John—clad only in camel skins—is baptizing several men kneeling before him, while on the left, other men are removing their garments to receive the sacrament in turn.
On the right is a group of women and children—the catechumens’ family members—who are witnessing the rite.
On the river in the background, a boat loaded with more people is approaching the shore.
The scene is rich in figures, movement, and color.
The canvas itself shows traces of minor previous restorations but is in excellent condition.
It is set in an antique frame from the early 18th century.
