Pair of 19th-century Thomas-Victor Sergent Palissy-style slipware bowls, 28 cm

An exceptional and rare pair of ceremonial, oversized table centerpieces for serving sweets, made of barbotine earthenware with a lead-based glaze, dating from the 19th century, circa 1870–1880
A work of great finesse characteristic of Thomas-Victor Sergent (1830–1890), the renowned Parisian master ceramist who followed in the tradition of Bernard Palissy and Victor Barbizet.
Each piece depicts a young boy draped like an Atlantean, supporting a large shell-shaped bowl with a superb grainy turquoise-blue glazed background. The naturalistic base mimics a tree trunk bordered by foliage in warm brown and deep green tones.
Attribution to Thomas-Victor Sergent is confirmed by the craftsmanship and glaze palette.

Overall in fine condition. Vibrant colors and glossy glaze. Note: there is an old, stable crack at the bottom of one of the bowls (see photos), with no major chips. A collector’s piece of great decorative value
