This version of the ‘Tobacco Leaf’ pattern is known as ‘Pseudo-Tobacco Leaf’.

It belongs to pattern B2, inventoried by Pierre Debomy in his publication Tobacco Leaf and Pseudo Feuille de Tabac et Pseudo, A tentative inventory, Tentative d’inventaire, Pierre L. Debomy. This pattern features two rings around the border and differs in its polychromy and floral arrangement.

This dish is of particularly impressive size and is one of the largest examples we have recorded.

An inscription on the reverse, dated 21 November 1889, reads:

‘To my dear cousin Mary, […] from M. A. McCarthy, wishing you happiness […] life’.

This dish was given as a gift to a certain Mary on 21 November 1889.

A restored chip andwith associated hairline on the eedge. The hairline is still visible.
