Art Nouveau-style Marble Bust, Young Woman, Signed By Pugi, 1900
Antique bust of a young woman in white marble, signed Pugi, circa 1900.
The young woman is depicted smiling, her face slightly turned, her hair rendered in soft strands and adorned with large flowers. The sculptor plays on the contrast between the smooth finish of the face and neck and the more dynamic, textured rendering of the hair, flowers, and drapery. The bust rests on a gray and white veined marble base.
Pugi’s signature is engraved on the reverse.
Italian work from the late 19th or early 20th century.

Guglielmo Pugi (c. 1850–1915) was an Italian sculptor active in Florence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His studio produced, among other things, busts, female figures, and decorative marble pieces for the Italian and international markets.
