An oil on panel by François Corbellini depicting a lively pastoral scene of shepherds in a light-drenched Corsican landscape.

This composition, rendered in the warm, luminous palette characteristic of the artist, reflects his deep attachment to Corsica and its rural traditions. The scene depicted in our painting also appears at the center of a triptych created by Corbellini and housed at the Fesch Museum, a major fine arts museum in Ajaccio.

Through his watercolors and illustrations, François Corbellini was one of the ambassadors of Corsica’s burgeoning tourism industry. The island’s landscapes and scenes were a constant source of inspiration for him. A key figure in the Ajaccio School in the early 20th century, he devoted a large part of his work to depicting Corsican landscapes, from the calanques of Piana to the surroundings of Ajaccio.

A student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Corbellini was trained by Jean-Léon Gérôme and Gustave Moreau, whose teachings had a lasting impact on his artistic sensibility. He continued to work in his Ajaccio studio until the end of his life and passed away in Piana in 1943.
