Original Double-sided Drawing—an Ancient Heroic Scene And Roman Archaeological Findings

Attributed to Jean-Guillaume Moitte, this remarkable double-sided drawing illustrates the deep fascination of French Neoclassical artists with the study of ancient models during their stays in Italy in the 18th century.

The front side features an elegant scene inspired by Roman antiquity: a draped female figure pointing to a military trophy consisting of a shield and a helmet, facing a second figure dressed in ancient style and armed with a spear. The rendering of the drapery, the finesse of the linework, and the balance of the composition are reminiscent of the great decorative and theatrical models studied in the Roman academies of the late 18th century.

The reverse side features several drawings of ancient objects and sculptures: a sphinx, a vase adorned with mascarons, sculpted bases, and figurative motifs rendered in the spirit of archaeological documentation. These studies were intended to inform the decorative, architectural, and sculptural research of French artists trained through direct contact with Italian antiquities.

The work as a whole possesses great decorative and documentary value, characteristic of the study drawings produced during the Grand Tour.

Good condition with a few slight signs of age and small, discreet foxing spots due to the age of the paper.
