Samperi 1986 Marble And Hardstone Marquetry Pedestal Table

Artist: Samperi
A rare and highly decorative Italian marble and hardstone inlaid table by Gigi Samperi, dated 1986. Created in Sicily and rooted in the traditional art of marble inlay, this remarkable table combines exceptional craftsmanship with a distinctive late 20th-century decorative aesthetic.

The substantial octagonal top is executed in pale marble and centered by an elaborate circular composition of carefully cut and fitted colored stones. Stylized white flowers and golden-toned foliage emerge against a richly varied ground of green, cream, brown and deep red stones, their natural colors and veining becoming an integral part of the design. Among the botanical decoration is a charming motif depicting two fish. The central composition is framed by a contrasting border, while delicate scrolling branches, leaves and flowers extend across the surrounding pale marble.

Gigi Samperi belonged to a Sicilian tradition of specialist marble inlay craftsmanship associated with Taormina. His son Michael Samperi subsequently continued the family craft, having learned the art of inlaid marble from his father.

The table is composed of two separate elements. The heavy decorated marble top is not permanently attached but simply rests upon the pedestal base and can therefore be removed for handling and transportation. The sculptural base features an octagonal marble foot and a tall faceted central support, providing an elegant architectural counterpoint to the richly ornamented top.

The piece is signed Gigi Samperi and dated 1986, with the inscription incised into the marble.

A rare example of late 20th-century Sicilian decorative art, combining traditional marble and hardstone inlay techniques with a bold and highly individual design.
