French Sarreguemines Burgos Wash Basin And Pitcher Set, Circa 1900

A charming French ceramic wash basin and pitcher set produced by the Sarreguemines manufactory, bearing the printed “Burgos U & Cie Sarreguemines” mark. Dating from circa 1900, this two-piece toilet or bedroom set is a particularly decorative example of French domestic ceramics from the turn of the 20th century.

Both pieces are decorated with the same rich burgundy-red transfer-printed floral pattern over a warm cream ground. Large stylized flowers, scrolling stems and foliage cover the generous basin and the rounded body of the pitcher, complemented by smaller floral borders and geometric bands. The pitcher has an elegant shaped rim and a large curved handle, while the substantial circular basin displays the decoration both around its interior and exterior, making the set highly decorative from every angle.

Originally intended for the traditional bedroom washstand, the ensemble now makes a wonderful decorative statement in a bathroom, bedroom or country-house interior. The original Sarreguemines Burgos factory mark is visible beneath both pieces.

The set shows age-related wear consistent with its period. The basin has visible hairlines/cracks, clearly illustrated in the photographs, together with crazing and minor traces of use. These signs of age contribute to the authentic character of this antique French set.
