19th Century Pair Of Wedgwood Blue Jasperware Vases On Walnut Pedestals
Artist: Wedgwood
A striking pair of 19th-century blue and white Jasperware vases attributed to Wedgwood, each vase raised on a finely carved walnut pedestal with gilt beaded decoration. Each vase features a rich cobalt-blue ground decorated with applied white reliefs in the classical taste, a decorative language closely associated with Wedgwood’s celebrated Jasperware production.
The elegant ovoid bodies are embellished with individual neoclassical figures and allegorical scenes, surrounded by delicate trailing foliage. Particularly attractive details include the applied lion-mask ornaments with suspended rings to the sides, the foliate decoration around the shoulders and foot, and the leaf-pattern border framing the flared rims. The crisp white relief decoration creates a particularly beautiful contrast against the intense blue ground.
Each vase is mounted on a carved square wooden pedestal with a circular molded support, carved leaf ornament and a gilt beaded border, giving the pair additional architectural presence and making them especially decorative when displayed together.
With their balanced proportions, classical iconography and vivid coloring, these vases would make an elegant addition to a neoclassical, Regency-inspired or traditional interior, whether displayed on a mantel, console, bookcase or pair of side cabinets.
Dimensions (each, including pedestal):
Height: 24.5 cm / 9.65 in
Diameter: 11 cm / 4.33 in
