An elegant portrait of a woman painted by Louis Süe, depicting a woman wearing a white jacket adorned with a large rose in her buttonhole. The background, rendered in warm, golden tones, highlights the complexion and the whiteness of the garment.

The dedication written directly on the painting identifies the model as Madeleine Sarrazy. Research suggests a connection between her and Marie Madeleine Sarrazy, born in Bordeaux in 1894 and who died in Paris in 1984, an identification that must, however, be treated with caution, as there is currently no document definitively establishing that they are the same person.

Louis Süe, born in Bordeaux in 1875, was a painter, architect, and interior designer. A leading figure in French decorative arts of the early 20th century, he founded the famous Compagnie des Arts Français with André Mare in 1919. In particular, he participated in the 1925 Paris International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, a major event in the history of Art Deco.

This portrait thus offers a particularly interesting insight into Süe’s work as a painter, which is less well-known than his work as an architect and interior designer.

Condition: good condition for its age, with small areas missing and isolated wear on the paint layer, particularly in the background and on the clothing. Slight craquelure
