An Italian Carved And Giltwood Sofa. Northern Italy, Late 18th Century Early 19th Century

A salon sofa of refined, enveloping semicircular form (en corbeille). The lower frieze is embellished with dense, vigorous continuous carving, decorated with classical motifs of scrolling foliage and acanthus leaves. The sofa rests on five supports, three of which are positioned at the front, elegantly turned in the form of inverted spinning tops. The piece retains its original period water-gilding over a gesso and red bole preparation. The sofa is entirely upholstered on both the front and back with a fine sage-green woven fabric, decorated with botanical sprays, roses, and polychrome peonies.
